New season Old story?

WE ARE BACK!!! screamed the idiot box adverts dragging us all to our couches and ensuring that we stay there on matchdays. Pre-season was all about the Olympics and comparisons between the Olympic spirit and how we could compare it to the spirit of footballers. Nevertheless, the new season started off with a bang on the 18th of August.

My sights were firmly fixed on the match happening at the Hawthorns where Liverpool were the visitors. There was renewed hope in the Reds camp after 3 seasons of finishing outside the Champions League spots. Out with the old, in with the new was the motto propagated by Fenway Sports Group, the Liverpool owners. They took the risk of facing the wrath of die-hard fans all around the world, when they decided to sack King Kenny and award his throne to a newbie, Brendan Rodgers. Rodgers had impressed with his tactics and knowledge of the game when he guided a team tipped to go down at the beginning of the season, to a respectable 11th position, in his first season in charge in the Premiership. not unsurprisingly, a 180 page dossier was enough to convince FSG that Brendan Rodgers was the right man for the job.

So, on to the game at the Hawthorns. It started out as it always does, with the home side exerting pressure in the opening stages. But as the half wore on, it was Liverpool who looked the most like opening the scoring. Had it not been for the familiar story of Luis Suarez missing a couple of sitters, Liverpool would have been 2 to the good within the first 35 minutes of the first half. The script though, could not have been written differently. Step up Zoltan Gera with a screamer in the 43rd minute and it was 1-0 to the home side.

The second half again looked to be going according to plan for the Reds, but everything changed when Steven Gerrard misplaced a pass that allowed Shane Long through and led to the sending off of Daniel Agger for the first time in his Liverpool career. That penalty was missed by Long, but more sloppy work by Martin Skrtel ensured it was 2-0 to West Brom by the 65th minute. From there on, there looked to be no way back for the Reds and it ended 3-0 on the night in favor or West Brom.

A few things that were clearly visible.
1. Physical strength can be the Reds undoing – West Brom were appropriately organized for the visit of Liverpool and they overpowered the Reds disposseing them easily in midfield with their physical strength. If the Reds do want to play their possession based football, they will have to ensure that more physical teams are not able to break them down this easily,
2. Shoddy finishing – Will it come back to haunt them again? It looks like that after the first game of the new season showed the Reds spurning 4 chances. If the Reds want to assert their ambition this season, they have to find a more prolific scorer up front and not give the strikers role to Luis Suarez.
3. Defensive line – the midfield for the Reds is not yet completely ready to play the possession based game that is desired by Brendan Rodgers and FSG. In such circumstances, playing a high defensive line with the wing backs moving up to support the attackers is nothing less than suicide. This frailty was exposed so easily by West Brom that if this is not corrected, even the poorest of teams will be able to break down the Reds in a counterattacking game.
4. Keeping the ball – working off the ball with high pressing is fine, but its criminal to give the ball away when you have it and there is no pressure on you. This was one of the reasons that Liverpool lost the game and was the cause for Daniel Agger getting sent off. The midfield must gel together well and ensure that they don’t give the ball away and commit silly mistakes which puts undue pressure on the defense.

Despite all these flaws, Rodgers looks to be doing a pretty decent job with the squad at his disposal. It must also not be forgotten that the true fruits of his hard work were visible in another game, the Swans 5-0 victory over QPR.
This was just the first game of the season, and as long as Rodgers can imprint his philosophy on a Liverpool squad that is threadbare by top 4 standards, the group will keep improving and could go on a run observed last season from Arsenal to nudge it into the top 4.
Only time will tell !!!

Some thoughts

Its been another long break from writing for me. All this while a lot has taken place in life. I have moved places; from Gurgaon back to Pune, where I started my career. What it means is, now I am making trips to Mumbai every weekend and catching up with friends. It feels good to be back home after a long time – almost 6 years. It was early January 2006 when I left Pune.

Well, it is not really to talk about myself that I started writing this post. There are several issues which have been consuming up our country from the inside. I really don’t intent to provide a solution or analyze these issues here, but pose certain questions which we  – as an educated society – must find an answer to.

Open up any paper and what you get to read is, rape, murder and corruption. Well, what I want to talk about is our legal system; which in all honesty, completely sucks. Which other educated and progressive society in the world will tolerate so many rapes every year? I mean, come on…..do you seriously expect me to call India a developing superpower? Nope. Not with these kind of things going on.

The cold blooded murders of Neeraj Grover and before that Jessica Lal and Aarushi Talwar. These cases seem to bring out a public outcry, but it lasts only for a while. Doesn’t this go to show that we are a highly fickle people? Only a new crime seems to bring us out of our deep slumber.

The affluent few barely care for the country. They are comfortable and secluded within their shells and care two hoots about the commoner.

The biggest problem, is that the babus and netas making the country hollow by assimilating the country’s wealth in their overseas accounts. Despite all the efforts by all the likes of good people like Anna Hazare, I don’t think there is much hope for a resurrection or revival. To top it all off, the government seems intent on passing a Lokpal bill which will allow them to clean up any mess they have created in making money.

What can the people of this country expect, if the very basis of the Lokpal Bill is the following:

Any government employee who is accused or corruption is entitled to a lawyer free of charge and provided by the government. In addition, the govt employee can countersue the accuser. If proven guilty, the govt employee is punishable for upto 6 months or an equivalent sum. If the accusation is proven false, the accuser is punishable for upto 2 years or an equivalent amount.

Do you really expect democracy to work in this way?

Add to that our politicians making comments about homosexuality and bisexuality. How can comment about something which you cannot understand? Leave those souls to themselves and get along with their work. If you have not yet understood, I am referring to the statement made by Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad that Gay sex is an unnatural disease.

In the midst of all this are we, the common man, potrayed beautifully by Mr. R K Laxman. Those of us who have a choice and a chance and are fed-up of seeing all these evils engulf our country decide to immigrate elsewhere to greener pastures. Those of us who cannot, decide to stay here and just bear witness to the Great Indian Tamasha.

Premier League Preview: West Bromwich Albion vs Liverpool FC

We are down to the business end of the season and the next 8 matches will determine whether we end up playing in Europe or licking our wounds in the ignominy of defeat, playing in only domestic competitions for one full season. Next up along the way are EPL survival hopefuls, West Bromwich Albion. The premier league new boys who are now being guided by ex-Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson, sit in 16th position on the table with 33 points and a goal difference of -15.

Liverpool travel to the Hawthorns trying to keep their momentum and winning run going. Liverpool’s last 6 games in the PL give a good indication of how Kenny Dalglish has transformed a once under-performing unit into one which looks like a well-oiled machine capable of grinding out results.

Last 6 games (latest left)
Liverpool: W W L D W W
West Brom: D W D D D L

Of the 6 aforementioned performances, Roy Hodgson has led West Brom in 5. He has managed to stall the losing streak that the club were going through and shored up the defense by reverting to the basics (tactics which failed at Liverpool). Their main attacking threat comes from Peter Odemwingie, who has scored 10 goals in his PL appearances this season. However, West Brom also pose a major aerial threat with Paul Scharner in particular doing his reputation no harm with some good performances over the last few games.

What has been impressive about West Brom since Roy Hodgson took over is that they do not give up until the final whistle is blown as was seen against Stoke City and Wolves.

Liverpool’s record against West Brom is quite good. Against the Baggies at the Hawthorns, Liverpool have won all in the last 4 meetings (in the past 10 years), scoring an incredible 15 goals. This certainly gives the reds some added inspiration, not that they needed any with a place in Europe at stake.

Liverpool have undergone a complete transformation under Kenny Dalglish and Roy Hodgson will have a point to prove to Liverpool’s owners when his side meets the Merseysiders at home. The Reds now though have a strikeforce to boast about. Winter acquisitions in the form of Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll, with a Raul Meireles firing on all cylinders plus the inspirational Steven Gerrard give Liverpool plenty of firepower up-front.

Liverpool have already demonstrated that they will be a force to reckon with next season after impressive victories over Chelsea (1-0 away) and Manchester United (3-1 home). With ambitious owners and the King guiding his army, they will be a tough proposition for West Brom even at home.

Match begins 2:00 PM local time, 7:30 PM IST.

A paradise in the clouds – Nainital

(Snaps to come)

Is it almost the end of the financial year? Do you need to utilize your vacations for the year? Well, doesn’t matter. Even if you do not have any vacations left, then March is the ideal time to visit this most beautiful of hill-stations in the North of India.

How to travel:

There are a few options available.

  1. By Train: Indian Railways runs Ranikhet Express exclusively for tourists visiting Nainital. Book your tickets 2 months prior to your date of travel and you will be assured of a berth. The fare is INR 507 per person for A/C 2 Tier sleeper and quite reasonable for other classes as well. The train departs at 22:40 IST from Old Delhi Station and reaches Kathgodam the next morning at 7.
    Cabs are available outside Kathgodam station to take you to Nainital. They charge anything from 400 INR during off-peak season to INR 800 during peak tourist season (small size hachback).
  2. By Bus: Various private operators operate buses from Connaught Place. The buses start plying between 8 and 10 PM IST and take you directly to Nainital. To travel in the most comfortable manner, book the Volvo bus. The fare is INR 950 per person.
  3. By Car: You could also drive down in your own vehicel or rent a cab to take you directly to Nainital. This option is not advisable.

Places to stay:

    You can choose your accomodation based on your budget. Below I list a set of places which range from moderately expensive to highly expensive.

  1. Hotel Lake View: (slightly expensive) Hotel Lake View promises to give you the best view of the Naini Lake and delivers on its promise. The rooms here are small, but cozy. The hotel staff are fairly courteous and you can enjoy a great evening tea sitting in their balcony watching the boats float past you. Take a lake view room and feel yourself floating on the lake as you lie on your bed.
  2. Hotel Arif Castles: (expensive) Arif Castles is located someway away from the main Mall Road in Nainital. However, they provide hourly pick n drop service (though in reality it is just a call away) and they have free entry to their disc. So party animals can enjoy there. They have a decent play area for kids as well. Also, the fact that it is on a height gives a different feel altogether. Services are in line with a hotel of its pricing.
  3. Hotel Manu Maharani: (very expensive) If you have a ton of money to throw away, then you are best off checking in here. Supposedly the best hotel in Nainital. Any reviews of this place would be appreciated.
  4. Snow View: (moderately expensive) Owned and operated by the Kumaon Mandal, its located on top of the hill near China Peak. Access is limited by the availability of the ropeway. However, its by far the most reasonable place in Nainital. The amount you pay covers breakfast, dinner and a one way ticket for the ropeway per day. Rooms are large and clean and well maintained. Staff is courteous and they also have a fully equipped bar and restaurant.
  5. Mount View: (moderately expensive) Another of the guest houses operated by the Kumaon Mandal, its located in Sukhatal. The Mall road is accessible from here on foot (unlike Snow View which requires a uphill climb on foot of about an hour). The staff and facilities here are as good as in Snow View and the rates are the same as well.
  6. India Hotel: (moderately expensive) Large and spacious rooms and spotlessly clean rooms are what are attractions here. Staff is not great. Overall, just fine for a budget package.

Places to visit and activities to do:
The best way to get around Nainital is to rent a cab. Local cab wallahs can drive you around all the tourist places for a reasonable rate. Expect it to be around 1200-13oo INR during off peak season and a fair bit more during peak traffic.

  • Naini Lake: Nainital was named after the lake which is at its’ centre, and the star attraction of the town. Naini lake boasts of a brilliant natural beauty and you can take a boat ride across the lake to witness its splendor.
  • China Peak: At the top of the hill surrounding the Naini Lake, China (pronounced as Chee-nah), it is accessible via the ropeway. A two way ropeway ticket will cost you INR 150 per person.
    On a clear day, you will be able to see all the neighboring hills and the snow capped peaks of the himalayas from Snow View Point on China Peak.
  • Tibetan market: A market set up next to the Naini Lake, it contains goods from around the place. The best things to buy from here are candles and nitty bitties like refrigerator magnets and wall decor. Woolens can be bought as well, but you have to bargain to get the best deal.
  • Lovers point/suicide point and the horse ride to Land’s End: There are horse trails from Lover’s point/Suicide Point (strange how lovers and suicide go together). A single ride will cost you about 500 bucks per person. The trail takes you through the heart of nature. Since its adjacent to the Jim Corbett Park, you can see wild animals. Take this ride during failing daylight so as to grab a chance at watching a deer stroll across the park.
    Don’t forget to take you camera to Land’s End to capture the view from there.
  • Other tals, Bimtal, Naukuchiatal and Sattal: These are lakes similar to Nainital and very peaceful as compared to Nainital. Go with some time to spare so that you can sit there and take in the feeling of bliss and feel nature’s calm quieten every thought and relax every muscle in your body.
  • Waterfall, Cave Garden and Zoo: If you are carrying your little ones along, these 3 places are sure to please them.

Time of year to visit :
Most people prefer May-June-July to avoid the heat of summer. However, you can also spend a snowy Christmas and New Year there as well as Spring and Fall when the weather is just perfect.

Europa League Preview: LiverpoolFC vs Sporting Braga (H)

Our beloved Liverpool FC face Sporting Braga of Portugal in a do-or-die home encounter to stay in the Europa League. Traiing 0-1 from a penalty scored by Alan, Liverpool have to win by a clear margin of 2 goals to progress to the next round. This means that either we have to win 2-0 or if Braga score a goal, we then have to win 3-1.

Now, talks of a 3-1 win would have made sense had we the services of a certain Steven Gerrard. Since he is recuperating from a groin surgery, we will have to make sure that the rest fill in form him as well as the inspirational Luis Suarez who sits out due to ineligibility.

Below I try to analyze the tactics deployed by Braga coach Domingos Pacienca and the ways to break down their formation.

First a few facts:
1. The current Braga coach favors a 4-3-3 or a 4-2-3-1 formation away from home.
2. Braga’s forwards as well as defenders love to shoot from range. We saw their left-back almost grab a beauty from all of 25 yards in the first leg.
3. Braga have a need to see the ball at their foot.

Now, down to business.
Analyzing Braga’s style of play we are most likely to see them play with a fluid 4-2-3-1; which is their preferred formation in away games. Their front 4 will rotate positions making it a very fluid combination as we saw at the Estadio AXA, and, it can also turn into a 4-1-4-1. Also, since they thrive with the ball at their feet as mentioned earlier, starving them of the ball will undoubtedly lead to rash challenges from them.

They will try and attack on the counter with the left-back Silvio leaving a gap on the left flank. This space can be utilized to break down their back 2. Liverpool will have to make sure that they have at least 3 people waiting for a cross in from the left when they go past Silvio.

Another important factor to be taken into consideration is the Braga backline. They have a hard time playing against physical forwards and it becomes imperative for Kenny to put Carroll in the starting line up. Braga will undoubtedly commit fouls like the one against Carroll. This can be proved by checking the way Hulk (of Porto) tormented the Braga defense in their 3-2 win way back in September of ’10.

King Kenny, being himself a tactical genius, would do well to play with 5 defenders, with Johnson on the right flank and Wilson on the left. Johnson should be given the freedom to go ahead in counters and break down Braga. In this scenario, there would be no need of any holding midfielders and he could play a 5-3-2 with both Kuyt and Carroll (physical strikers) up front. The 3 central midfielders would hold the ball well and starve Braga of the ball.

Even if Liverpool decide to play a traditional 4-4-2, it would stand to benefit, because Braga can be broken by the wide men coming in off the flanks.

What to expect:
Whatever formation these 2 teams come out with today evening, one can be sure that we have a cracker ahead of us. Braga have a goal to protect them, but you can be sure they will not take things lying down.
With a 40000+ crowd cheering them on, Liverpool will look to initimidate their Portuguese visitors and break them down, one brick at a time. Liverpool have a lot at stake and will go for an all out win.

The turnaround

Talk about twists and turns and this season is just the most topsy-turvy of them all. New manager, new owners and a lot of new faces in the team. The new owners brought us hope, but our then manager Roy Hodgson, could not inspire the team any further. Roy’s record in the EPL spoke for itself.

Roy Hodgson record:

Total Home Away
Won Lost Draw Goals+ Goals- Won Lost Draw Goals+ Goals- Won Lost Draw Goals+ Goals-
7 9 4 24 27 6 2 2 17 8 1 7 2 7 19

This miserable record led to Hodgson’s sacking errrr….departure via mutual consent on the 8th of January 2011 and in stepped out lord and savior, King Kenny Dalglish.
Kenny’s arrival lifted the mood of both the players and the fans alike. A marvellous piece of judgement by Kenny was to bring in Steve Clarke as first team coach. Having worked with Jose Mourinho during his Chelsea days, this was a man who had seen the world and conquered it.
One could immediately see a difference in the player’s attitude and the changed training methodologies at work. A defense which was letting a flood of goals in, suddenly seemed to have brought it down to a leak and then a tight seal.

Kenny’s record in EPL till date:

Total Home Away
Won Lost Draw Goals+ Goals- Won Lost Draw Goals+ Goals- Won Lost Draw Goals+ Goals-
5 2 2 15 9 3 0 2 9 4 2 2 0 6 5

All of a sudden, life seems rosy again. This does not mean that the team are playing at their best again. There is a lot of work yet to be done, but if we take a look at the figures in terms of points, no team have done better than us since King Kenny took over. Only Arsenal have the same number of points (17) over the same period, albeit we have played 1 game more.

Of the remaining 9 games, we have tough fixtures against Sunderland (A), Manchester City (H), Arsenal (A) and Spurs (H). Also, the games against Fulham and Aston Villa (both Away) should not be taken lightly.

If we can get anywhere between 12-16 points from these games, we stand a good chance of finishing in the top 5 which should see us getting a European place. Since Spurs are in their (so called) maiden Champions League appearance, they will be preoccupied with it and we might see them falter with all their European exertions.

However, with the league being the most open in very many years, anything could happen and we must keep our fingers crossed.
YNWA!!

Clustered EJB 2.x deployment on JBoss 5.1.0

Recently I encountered a situation wherein I had to migrate an existing EJB2.x application. The application was using JBoss 4.0.3 as the container. It had to be migrated to JBoss 5.1.0.
Also, the EJBs to be migrated were Stateful and Stateless Session beans. The beans had to be deployed in a clustered environment.

If you have ever deployed a clustered EJB, you will know the container configuration file – jboss.xml in this case – packaged with the EJB has to contain the corresponding configuration for clustered deployment.
Below is a snippet:

<jboss>
<security-domain>java:/jaas/csl2-ejb</security-domain>
<missing-method-permissions-excluded-mode>false</missing-method-permissions-excluded-mode>
<enterprise-beans>
<session>
<ejb-name>SampleBean</ejb-name>
<jndi-name>com.example.SampleBean</jndi-name>
<call-by-value>true</call-by-value>
<configuration-name>SampleBeanContainer</configuration-name>
<clustered>True</clustered>
<cluster-config>
<partition-name>DefaultPartition</partition-name>
<home-load-balance-policy>org.jboss.ha.framework.interfaces.RandomRobin</home-load-balance-policy>
<session-state-manager-jndi-name>/HASessionState/Default</session-state-manager-jndi-name>
</cluster-config>
<method-attributes>
<method>
<method-name>*</method-name>
<transaction-timeout>1200</transaction-timeout>
</method>
</method-attributes>
</session>
</enterprise-beans>
<container-configurations>
<container-configuration extends="Clustered Stateful SessionBean">
<container-name>SampleBeanContainer</container-name>
<container-pool-conf>
<MaximumSize>100</MaximumSize>
<strictMaximumSize>true</strictMaximumSize>
</container-pool-conf>
</container-configuration>
</container-configurations>
</jboss>

Here I want to cover a specific point. The bolded tag, PartitionName is set by default in JBoss to DefaultPartition. In case this tag is not specified, JBoss picks up the default partition name from /conf/standardjboss.xml.

However, we observed that inspite of configuring the appropriate default ‘partitionName’ in standardjboss.xml, JBoss 5.1.0 simply would not deploy the EJBs throwing a deployment exception.

The only way out that I found was to keep a placeholder for PartitionName in my jboss.xml corresponding to each clustered EJB.
JBoss accepts a runtime parameter of jboss.partition.name. Providing this as a JVM option during JBoss startup will act to replace the corresponding partition name and successfully startup the server.

so, the above configuration looks like this now:
<partition-name>${jboss.partition.name}</partition-name>

Spring: lookup-method injection

The first of my java posts.

Those who have been working with Spring for a while (or have even just started) will know that Spring instantiates all beans by default as Singleton. Now, there are scenarios wherein you would want multiple instances of a bean to be created (prototype) from within a singleton bean.
One approach is to have your singleton class implement BeanFactoryAware interface. However, that ties the code to spring; and believe me, you would NOT want to do that.

A second, better approach is to use lookup-method injection. Let us see an example below:
1. DirectoryPoller is a class which listens on a given directory in the file system for dropped files.
2. PollerMaker is a class which instantiates an instance of a DirectoryPoller.
3. PollerThread is a Thread instance which will be instantiated for every folder to be listened into.

Here are the code snippets from the above classes:
(Note DirectoryPoller is a third party class provided by Cristiano Sadun. Obtain DirectoryPoller and its dependent packages here.)

public abstract class PollerMaker {
/*
* Abstract method to create DirectoryPoller instance
* by lookup-method feature provided by Spring.
* This is done to avoid tying the code to spring using
* BeanFactoryAware interface. DirectoryPoller instances are
* created one per invoking thread i.e. one per file type.
*/
protected abstract DirectoryPoller
createDirectoryPoller();

public DirectoryPoller getPollerInstance(){
return createDirectoryPoller();
}
}

The above class is the abstract singleton used to retrieve an instance of DirectoryPoller each time the getPollerInstance() method is called.

private class PollerThread implements Runnable{
FileFoundListener fileListener;

PollerThread(FileFoundListener plugin){
fileListener = plugin;
}

public void run(){
//DirectoryPoller poller = (DirectoryPoller) factory.getBean("directory.poller", DirectoryPoller.class);
DirectoryPoller poller = maker.getPollerInstance();
poller.addFileFoundListener(fileListener, fileListener.getSearchDirectory());
poller.addDirectory(fileListener.getSearchDirectory().getAbsolutePath());
poller.start();
}
}

Now, for the Spring context configuration:

<!-- The extended Sadun DirectoryPoller to service out specific needs -->
<bean id="directory.poller" scope="prototype">
<property name="autoMove" value="true" />
<property name="pollInterval" value="2000" />
<!-- Set this property if this application needs to wait for another application to come up.
Use a java.util.concurrent.CountDownLatch instance with jdk5.0 and higher. -->
<!-- <property name="countDownLatch" ref="" />-->
</bean>

<!-- The lookup-method DirectoryPoller creator -->
<bean id="poller.maker">
<lookup-method name="createDirectoryPoller" bean="directory.poller" />
</bean>

On container instantiation, Springs ApplicationContext will load all the declared Singleton beans into the container.

*Tip*
Remember, that the Singleton which will invoke the Prototype instances has to be loaded by Spring, otherwise Spring will not override your abstract method using CGLIB to provide its own implementation.

Peepli Live (2010) Review

I’m guessing and i’m probably right in saying that i’m not amongst the first people to write this review. However, what I felt about the movie was quite different as compared to the enthusiastic reactions expressed by most other viewers. Also, seeing that this was an Aamir Khan production had already raised expectations in all quarters.

First, about the characters. A small family in a village town comprising of two brothers, their mother and the wife and kid of the younger brother. A set of local, state and national politicians, civil servants and a horde of reporters.

If a movie could have a start, I would recommend it be like Peepli Live. The movie starts to the very catchy tune of ‘Des mera angrezi babu…“. The theme of the movie appears initially to be really strong, trying to depict the plight of farmers in our country; the incidents where farmers take their own lives because of their inability to repay their debts to either banks or the local zamindar.

This is one such case where Natha and Budhia have to decide between who dies and who lives because they cannot repay their debts to the bank. In the end it is Natha who decides to part with his life. However, the turn of events is such that this becomes a major political issue covered by national television channels and almost starts a war.

Up until a point in the movie, the director seems to have done justice to the central idea of the movie. However, in the end what remains is, it hitting out mainly at the media in an obnoxious manner.

All considered, I would not recommend you to waste your money in theatres. Please rent a DVD and watch.

Rating: not worth rating.
